WTA Rome Preview: Konta vs Muguruza

Konta vs Muguruza (Approx 10:00pm AEST)

I remarked yesterday that I needed to see a little more from the game of Johanna Konta before jumping into her matches.

Yesterday, I liked what I saw.

Part of the reason for sitting out of her meeting with Begu yesterday was the fact Begu had put together a pretty solid block of claycourt tennis either side of the US Open. With little recent clay form to go off from Konta, I wanted to see her on court before getting involved in her matches this week.

What I saw yesterday against Begu was impressive. 6-0 6-4 in 83 minutes, losing only 14 points on serve for the match whilst winning over half of return points on the serve of the Romanian. I prefer Konta against bigger strikers of the ball, and with the conditions forecast for this match today against Muguruza, I love the underdog price here for Konta.

Muguruza is still early into her comeback from injury, an issue that hampered her a little moreso on the hardcourts in New York. She has wins over Sloane Stephens (who remains out of form) and Coco Gauff, who has a liability on clay in her second serve at this stage of her career. For Gauff to be able to take control of their match for long periods is concerning, and Muguruza will need to significantly improve her game considering Konta lacks the same weaknesses on clay as Gauff.

The value here lies with Konta, and I am happy to make a 2 unit selection on her to win here as an underdog. This is a significant step up in opposition, and I cannot have Muguruza as a favourite on what I have seen.

Suggested Bet

2 units Konta to defeat Muguruza at $2.17 at Unibet
