Coric vs Travaglia (Approx 08:30pm AEST)
This play follows on from my selection on Garin the other day against Coric. Overall, I felt that Garin lost that match more than Coric won it.
As far as plays go over the last couple of weeks, that match made for more frustrating viewing than most. Garin handed the ascendancy to Coric on multiple occasions in the first set, double faulting at 30/30 or Deuce to put pressure on himself consistently. When you combine that with Coric looking to struggle to hit with any form of depth consistently off both wings on the clay, and the new strapping on his shoulder, it feels as though the Croatian is in a vulnerable spot today as a heavy favourite.
Stefano Travaglia really impressed me in round 1, defeating Taylor Fritz as an underdog without losing serve for the match. It impressed me as I have the American as a slightly underrated performer on the clay, having delivered some solid results on the surface in 2019. It was made more impressive by Travaglia’s low first serve percentage (51%), going on to win 6-4 7-6 in 94 minutes. I am happy to overlook his large loss to Andujar in last weeks Challenger, with Travaglia having just received his wildcard into the Masters 1000 draw in Rome. This is a massive opportunity for the Italian, especially when you consider Coric was below his best in the previous round.
This match has upset written all over it in my opinion. Based on what I have seen from both Travaglia on clay over the last couple of weeks, and the below par, albeit successful, performance from Coric in round 1, this looks a value price on the Italian, and I am happy to take it for 2 units. If the Italian can continue to be assertive and attack, he wins today in my opinion.
