WTA Rome Preview: Putintseva vs Peterson

Posted on

This match originally stood out to me as a strong play for Putintseva at the -4 game handicap, however on looking into this match a little further I did have a couple of small concerns, even with the form of Rebecca Peterson.

  1. The form of Peterson has been incredibly disappointing across the majority of 2020. She is devoid of confidence on all surfaces, however may take some consolation from the fact she was able to beat Putintseva at Roland Garros last year, which may give her some belief coming into this one. Putintseva is a player that will give you a chance to dictate and try and take control, so there is the potential for her to be played into some form today in the conditions.
  2. I wonder how Putintseva will go backing up from a career-best effort at the US Open. She would have high hopes for the French Open in a couple of weeks, and we have seen a couple of poor performances from similar style players with less power over the last few days.

There was enough here to sway me away from making a play on Peterson, so for this match I will watch on. I think Peterson may control a part of this match-up, it is just a matter of how long she can sustain her effort off a number of losses.
