Kawa vs Kovinic (Approx 09:30pm AEST)
Katarzyna Kawa doesn’t appear to be respected by bookmakers at the moment, coming up against a player Danka Kovinic who looks on paper to have performed above average over the last couple of weeks. .
I remarked yesterday that I would be keen to oppose Kovinic in some capacity off her quick turnaround from Istanbul, however she got a very generous first round draw in Ulrikke Eikeri. Instead, I have her far too short against a far more capable player in Kawa, who has produced some very solid results on clay over the last 18 months.
Kawa did a fantastic job of fighting back from a set down against Christina McHale, winning 4-6 6-4 7-5. The win looks to have been underrated, and when you look at the quality of her clay form in the latter part of last year, I find it hard to see how she is $3+ in this match-up. Kovinic herself has also been solid recently, with wins in Istanbul over Bondarenko and Van Uytvanck before falling to Eugenie Bouchard. Personally, I have some question marks over the consistency of the game of Kovinic, and as such I am happy to oppose her at the current quote.
Happy to play Kawa here as an underdog for 1.5 units.
