Thompson vs Travaglia (Approx 01:00am AEST)
This will follow on a similar train of thought as some of the other ATP selections you will see in the early stages of the tournament.
I would give the edge to Jordan Thompson in just match-up in these conditions at the best of times, however the best-of-5 nature of this match-up will fairly and squarely advantage the Australian and his fitness base. I prefer him against bigger servers, so I am not too worried about the first serve of the Italian over the longer format. Thompson looked solid in his win over Mmoh last week, before falling to surprise qualifier Salvatore Caruso. Travaglia found himself heading back to the drawing board after losing in the first round of qualifying to Norbert Gombos.
The -3.5 game handicap for Thompson looks to be value to the point of a 1 unit selection. The Australian should be too good for too long here, and if he can neutralise the Italian’s serve consistently he should be able to progress to the second round in my opinion.
