Y Wang vs Sorribes-Tormo (Approx 06:30pm AEDST)
I think a little too much has been read into a couple of recent performances on hardcourt by Sara Sorribes Tormo, and she looks a little too short today against Yafan Wang. There isn’t a particular area in their games on hardcourt that I feel favours SST in any capacity, so I am finding the current game handicap for Wang to be quite appealing.
The match that may be overrated a touch leading into this meeting is the 6-4 6-4 win over Alison Van Uytvanck in Limoges a couple ago, as well as a three set loss to Kristina Mladenovic in Dubai. Mladenovic was right in the middle of a heavy training block that week in Dubai, and didn’t take the tournament on with full focus and motivation. Mladenovic was still able to win over half of her points on return, and consistently found herself deep in SST service games. Van Uytvanck is a completely different style of opponent to Wang, and SST was able to capitalise on a poor performance from the bigger hitting AVU.
That won’t occur today, with Wang far more controlled and consistent in terms of her playing style. The match-up works well for Wang at home, and with a bit of extra time on the ball today against a weaker opponent, she should be able to progress quite comfortably.
Happy to make a 2.5 unit selection on Wang to win and cover the game handicap today.
