The 3rd quarter of the US Open Women’s draw features Coco Gauff and a few other interesting players. Gauff is the defending champion and 3rd favorite to win the tournament by betting odds with a price of 10.00(+900). It’s hard to call a season with a title and several semifinal appearances a disappointment, but we haven’t see Coco reach the level she achieved last season. She lost in two quick sets in round two in Toronto and lost her first match in Cincinnati. Gauff could find her form at any moment and she’ll be a big favorite in the first two rounds, but after that things get dicey. Starting round three, her path could be Elina Svitolina, Emm Navarro, Paula Badosa, Aryna Sabalenka and then Iga Swiatek in the final. Of course, that is a worst case scenario, but the road to a second US Open title will be a tough one for Gauff. She can certainly do it, but I’m certainly not betting on her to do it and I certainly don’t think you should either.
Emma Navarro has had a great season by almost any metric and should be poised to make a deep run at the US Open. She’s currently playing in the WTA 500 tournament in Monterrey, Mexico this week and is alive into the semifinals. It’s generally not great to wear oneself out the week before a grand slam, but worst case she’ll finish there on Saturday, take a 7-8 hour flight, and be in New York City by Sunday with an easy first round opponent on Monday or hopefully Tuesday. Navarro’s first three matches should be victories and then she’ll likely play Coco Gauff and Paul Badosa to win this quarter with Aryna Sabalenka and the winner of the top half to follow. She beat Gauff already this season at Wimbledon and played a tight, 3-set match against Badosa in Rome. Navarro is 7.50(+650) to win this quarter and 51.00(+5000) to win the title. I think both of those numbers are value even if she has to face her worst possible path. Let’s add Navarro to our portfolio.
A name I’ve mentioned a few times already is Paula Badosa. After a soft hiatus to be part of Paulanos (aka Tsitisdosa), she is back to playing some very good to great tennis. She won a title in Washington and gave Jessica Pegula all she could handle in the semifinals of Cincinnati. Badosa is in good form and these courts should suit her strengths nicely although she has yet to make a deep run in the US Open. She sits in the top half of the quarter which means she only has to play one of Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro, and Elina Svitolina and that wouldn’t happen until the quarter final. There could be a few tricky opponents before that match, but Badosa should have the talent advantage and would at worst be a small underdog. Badosa is 6.50(+550) to win the 3rd quarter and 41.00(+4000) to win the title. I’ll happily grab both of those.
