Alexander Shevchenko has already become one of the steadier players on tour, and his transition from a Challenger to ATP player was as smooth as anyone’s recently. The new Kazakh citizen only lost to Alexander Bublik and Hubert Hurkacz this indoor season and we can all recall his wins over Stan Wawrinka, Taylor Fritz or Karen Khachanov last fall.
Make no mistake, Holger Rune is the more talented player of the two, however, his dips in matches he should win more easily have become a regularity, just seen as recently as yesterday when he lost the second set 1-6 to Roman Safiullin. Rune also had to retire in Montpellier two weeks ago as his arm still seems to trouble him. Against someone as consistent as Shevchenko, I wouldn’t make Rune as big of a favorite. Shevchenko already took a set off Rune in Brisbane this year and I see value in him repeating just that in Rotterdam today.
