It’s time for the first set of back-to-back WTA 1000 events. We start in Doha, Qatar this week and head to Dubai, United Arab Emirates next week. Round 1 will start soon in Doha and I think the betting markets have the wrong woman favored in the matchup of Donna Vekic versus Katerina Siniakova. Neither has had much success on these courts in the past, but looking at their overall history on hard courts, Vekic profiles as the better to me. She has a better hold+break rate, a better average spread, and a better record against a similar level of competition in WTA events. Neither has played great tennis to start this season, but Vekic’s performances rate better than Siniakova’s and there’s nothing in the matchup of their styles that concerns me. I make Vekic a 1.77(-130) favorite and the current price is 2.00(+100. That’s a bet.
