Jake’s Cordoba Preview: Ramos vs. Coria

Posted on

I think you’d need to have a pretty severe illness to watch this match from start to finish, but if I was watching the whole thing, I know who I’d want to be on in sweltering conditions.

Albert Ramos comes into this contest with a 24-hour rest in the wake of a three-sets win over Pedro Cachin, whereas Federico Coria is backing up after a near-three hour contest against Daniel Altmaier that can only be described as a fight to the death.

Usually a marathon wouldn’t concern me with Coria, but it’s the underlying scheduling that could really bother his legs.

Coria is coming off a run to the final at Brazil last week, and I just worry about the accumulative fatigue against Ramos who hadn’t played since the Australian Open.

I’m not going to pretend there’s some sort of technical advantage for either player – this is simply going to be survival of the fittest – and I’ve graded this contest a coin flip.

It’s funny, because Ramos came up a similar price in a match here last year and I remember Coria suffering an injury in the second set before miraculously winning in the tie-breaker.

The contest being in Argentina gives Coria the advantage, but main draw success has been in the corner of Ramos much more often, and crucially I think he’s going to have more in the tank.

Also, before I let you go, I just want to mention that Ramos’ short term form always matters little to me because even at his age, he always seems to randomly rock up and win a 250 event.

He’s an absolute bulldog and the win over Cachin confirmed that.
