Vinny’s Challenger Burnie Preview – Rio Noguchi vs Dane Sweeny

Posted on

I’m kind of surprised about the latest odds movement in this match between two Challenger mainstays. The wind will have a say today in Tasmania and Dane Sweeny should be able to resist that with his compact game and movement. The 22-year-old is still progressing and had a satisfying Australian Open campaign as he qualified for the main draw and only lost in five sets to Francisco Cerundolo. He’s 70 points ahead of Rio Noguchi in both the overall and the hard-court Elo ratings and I think the only explanation for the shift towards the Japanese is his 8-2 record in 2024. He needed three sets against Marat Sharipov, Kaichi Uchida and Maximus Jones as well as a retirement from Yasutaka Uchiyama though, so I don’t rate that record as highly. I was okay with the 1.67 opener on Sweeny, but at 1.75+ I feel the need to get involved.
