It seems like the market agrees with me here on not fully buying the Paula Badosa comeback just yet. The former world #2 did look alright playing doubles at the World Tennis League exhibition, but then lost her first match back on tour against Bernarda Pera in Adelaide. Just like Amanda Anisimova, Badosa is clearly good for a solid match again here and there, however, it’s their stamina that I have trouble trusting.
On the contrary, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova had a really strong opening to her 2024 campaign as she beat Beatriz Haddad Maia and Katerina Siniakova in Adelaide and was on par with Jessica Pegula, only losing 7-6, 5-7, 4-6 to the current world #5. Having defeated Donna Vekic in straight sets in round one, Pavlyuchenkova should continue to ride the wave of confidence and I just have her as the more reliable and more consistent player over Badosa, who probably needs a few more weeks to slowly get back to 100%. There’s not a ton of value left in this play, but I’d still play Pavlyuchenkova down to 1.70.
