Jake’s Australian Open Preview: A double-digit underdog

Anyone close to me and my tennis operations knows I’m a huge Daniil Medvedev fan.

I was on him to win his maiden Masters 1000 title, World Tour Finals, and grand slam.

I thoroughly enjoy watching the Russian play, but I can’t justify his round two price against Finland’s Emil Ruusuvouri.

It’s not cutting edge analysis, but I didn’t love what I saw from the Russian during his first round win over Terence Atmane (via retirement), and I think Ruusuvouri has played enough quality tennis in 2024 to fancy his chances as a big outsider.

He’d know he’s not expected to win, but Ruusuvouri is a very clean hitter of the ball and can be quite dangerous when confident.

He’s 27-18 in the last 52 weeks on hard courts, registering two wins over Roberto Bautista Agut and one win over Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov and Tommy Paul. None of these players would start longer than $6 against Medvedev.

Now, I know the 24-year-old doesn’t have the same credentials as the players I’ve just mentioned, but he’s met Medvedev twice before and never started longer than $5.

This is the grand slam stage, but the Russian’s played just one match in 2024 and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had his hands full, here.

This is well worth a poke at the price.
