Vinny’s Australian Open Qualifying Men Preview – Couacaud vs Jacquet

Posted on

Outside of his run to the Challenger title in Olbia, there’s not a whole lot that warrants Kyrian Jacquet being such a heavy favorite against compatriot Enzo Couacaud. The current Elo ratings have Couacaud 10 points ahead and the margin widens to 40 points when it comes to hard courts.

You can see Couacaud is very comfortable in the early goings of a season. At last year’s Australian Open, he went all the way through qualies, won his first-round main draw match in straight sets and even took a set off Novak Djokovic in the second round. That was probably the best I have seen Couacaud play in his career. This year, he started with a Challenger final in Noumea, beating Polmans, Bouzige, Gaston and Brouwer before looking a bit flat in the final against Cazaux. Maybe that’s why the market has pushed him all the way from the 1.50 opener to 2.25. I might be missing something, but this drift is far too crazy in my eyes. There might be some twists and turns in this battle between two Frenchmen, so I’m taking the underdog to win as well as the match to go over 2.5 sets.
