Steve’s WTA Cluj-Napoca Preview: Buzarnescu vs Pliskova

Posted on

I thought I would be previewing Kawa vs Buzarnescu about 24 hours ago. Instead, we have Pliskova vs Buzarnescu.

Mihaela Buzarnescu was able to win in straight sets again in round 2, coming from a break down in the second set to defeat Lara Arruabarrena 6-3 7-5. I could write a bit here about Buzarnescu, however I would likely be repeating myself based on my round 1 and round 2 previews. Whilst she can be a little bit erratic, it is the consistency in the level of the Romanian on the return of serve of late on the clay that has impressed me the most. She will need to find a similar level again today with a stronger server across the net.

I have been a little worried that I have been underrating Kristyna Pliskova, however I still think she should be giving up 3.5 to 4 games on recent form. She won only 30% of points behind her second serve against Kawa, and if Kawa was able to actually maintain her level on the TWENTY break point chances she earned, she would be here in the quarter final. Instead, Pliskova has made it through Trevisan and Kawa whilst saving 24/30 break points faced across her 20 service games.

This looks to be a great spot to continue to support the Romanian. She has the power to trouble Pliskova, who cannot cover the court as well. Barring a high first serve percentage from Pliskova (if she can put 70+ percent of first serves into play then I will tip my cap and move on), Buzarnescu should be able to win and cover here at home, and the quicker turnaround for her today prevents this from being a stronger play.

Suggested Bet:

2.5 units Buzarnescu -2.5 games vs Pliskova at $1.89 at Topsport
