Whilst 2021 has been a bit of a struggle for Marie Bouzkova compared to last year, I think this is a good spot for the Czech to regain some momentum for her season against Storm Sanders.
Whatever momentum Bouzkova had gained through a final in Australia and a semi final in Mexico was halted with an injury she sustained Madrid in April, when injuring her wrist against Petra Kvitova. After some time away from the tour, she looked to probably return a little too early, as shown by her loss in round 1 at Roland Garros. Whilst she was able to win a couple of matches on the grass, it certainly isn’t her preferred surface. What I did see in her game though were signs that she was edging back to the level we saw earlier this year in Melbourne.
She also gets Storm Sanders here off a long fortnight. Sanders went deep in the women’s doubles at Wimbledon, and was still around and part of the support team for Ash Barty in the final on Saturday. Whilst I love her game and the rise she is making towards the Top 100, I am not entirely sure this is the best style of match-up for her in recent form.
Bouzkova will extend rallies significantly in this one, and should enjoy the return to the hardcourt. I had this game handicap similar to Stojanovic vs Diatchenko, in thinking I would be looking at a -5 game handicap. Instead it is 3.5 games at some places, albeit juiced. With -4 games available at Topsport, I will back Bouzkova there. I also don’t mind the $2+ for -4.5 games if that is available as well.
