Steve’s WTA French Open Preview: Svitolina vs Krejcikova

Posted on

I am entering into pretty rare territory for myself in backing in Elina Svitolina.

I genuinely don’t mind this match-up for Svitolina. For all the negatives around the performances and lapses from her through rounds 1 and 2, she still managed to win 6-2 7-5 and 6-4 6-0. She looks to be a player that is more comfortable on the clay when her opponent is able to generate a bit of pace on the ball, and she should receive that today with Barbora Krejcikova.

Whilst the lead in form of Krejcikova has indeed been impressive, the absolute gift of a win from Ekaterina Alexandrova in round 2 didn’t tell me all that much. Krejcikova got the win 6-2 6-3 on the back of 11 winners and 19 unforced errors. You match up the form of both players coming in, and the quality of opposition for Svitolina is far and away stronger, even if Krejcikova has had more success in terms of wins.

Svitolina has 4 Top-20 wins to her name over the last 12 months on clay, putting her in impressive company only one back from Barty. She has decent form here and with the pace on the ball from Krejcikova, I love this price for her in the head to head market.
