Vinny’s WTA Indian Wells Qualifying Preview – Taylor Townsend vs Clervie Ngounoue

Posted on

I’m not reading too much into Taylor Townsend’s first-round win over Iva Jovic. The highly-talented 16-year-old was going all-out last week, reaching the final at the ITF W35 event in Spring, Texas. Said final finished just 26 hours before the Indian Wells qualifying match against Townsend. That being said, Clervie Ngounoue’s 6-2, 6-3 win over Alize Cornet didn’t come as a massive surprise either with the Frenchwoman really continuing her downward trajectory.

Ngounoue is a raw talent who still lacks consistency at times, but I don’t think she should be given a less-than 30% chance to beat Townsend today. The slow courts obviously don’t favor Townsend and while Ngounoue can generate power herself, she does possess much better footwork. Having the young gun closer to 40%, I’m stacking half a unit each on the ML as well as the set and game handicaps.
