Vinny’s ATP Rio de Janeiro Preview – Roberto Carballes Baena vs Cristian Garin

Posted on

Already a little late on this one, but I still think there’s value to be found on Roberto Carballes Baena today. As mentioned yesterday, conditions in Rio de Janeiro are extreme and this can only benefit the Spaniard against an unfit / rarely healthy Cristian Garin. I always had a high opinion of the Chilean, but let’s face it, his body doesn’t seem to be made for a long, successful career.

Garin lost all of his matches in 2024 and he also had to retire from his last match against Bernabe Zapata Miralles in Cordoba after getting shacked 3 & 2 by Marco Cecchinato in Punta del Este. Now Carballes Baena may not be as gifted as Garin, but just like Munar, he can outgrind his opponents. Since I highly doubt that Garin is ready for a taxing clay-court match right now, I’m giving RCB around a 60% chance to advance. Also make sure to place this bet with a bookie that pays after retirements since that’s a bigger-than-usual possibility.
