It’s Argentina vs Spain day in Cordoba and I’m keen to take the foreign player in this matchup between Francisco Cerundolo and Jaume Munar.
Cerundolo didn’t have a great start to 2024 and something seems to be wrong with him. After losing in straight sets to Roberto Bautista Agut and Alexandre Muller, barely beating Dane Sweeny and getting smacked by Fabian Marozsan, he also lost to Timofey Skatov representing Argentina at home in Davis Cup qualifiers. The Argentine sends balls flying on a consistent basis and at slight altitude in Cordoba, I don’t see his game quickly turning around since it is even harder to control the ball in these conditions.
On the other side, Munar will enjoy the heat and humidity to the max. Even if Cerundolo finds back his game, Munar is one of the toughest opponents to get past in these conditions. His physical, retrieving style demands a clinical performance of his opponents to hit past him. The Spaniard already showed his favor for the conditions in his first-round match where he beat Daniel Elahi Galan 6-2, 6-4. But even before that, his overall form was much better than Cerundolo’s.
While Munar absolutely loves the Cordoba conditions, Cerundolo is 2-4 in this event against players comparable to Munar. I actually make Munar the slight favorite here, so would play him anywhere >2.00.
