It’s great to see Anca Alexia Todoni play her first WTA 250 event at home in Romania. The 19-year-old has improved a lot last year when she finished the season on a 58-17 record. Most of these matches were played on clay, however, I’m convinced her game can work even better on quicker courts. A player named Elena Rybakina was growing up on clay courts too and I could see Todoni taking the same turn and becoming a hard-court-oriented player. She’s tall and possesses an explosive game from the baseline. Before getting injured late in the season, Todoni defeated top 100 players Diane Parry and Viktoriya Tomova among others.
As for Erika Andreeva, I rate her a tad lower than the market does. Mirra’s older sister is playing (and winning) a lot of tennis matches, however, she’s not invulnerable to giving up sets against weaker players. In qualifying for the Transylvania Open, Andreeva lost the first set to Irina Khromacheva who was later forced to retire. I’m thinking this is a sweet buy-low spot on the young Romanian who will also receive a lot of crowd support.
