Jake’s Davis Cup Preview: Tabilo vs. Varillas

Posted on

Chilean spark plug Alejandro Tabilo isn’t usually someone I want to bet into as a short favourite, but I’m having a hard time understanding why he’s not shorter ahead of his Davis Cup contest against Juan Pablo Varillas.

The hard court data for someone who is normally considered a clay court guy is truly sensational as he’s coming off an Auckland final before the Australian Open.

Betting into someone after they reach somewhat of a market peak isn’t something I like to do either, but again, the sheer lack of hard court ability from Varillas is quite evident.

While the Peruvian is tenacious and not an easy out on the dirt, he’s 6-13 since the start of 2023 on the surface, losing his last five in a row, and not to strong opposition.

Matthew Dellavedova, Filip Misolic and Roberto Carballes Baena are among the players who’ve knocked him off recently, and Tabilo would make minced meat out of them most days.

Additionally, this match takes place in Santiago and the Chilean crowds aren’t known for holding back.

Tabilo won’t be able to rock up and notch an easy win, but if he plays close to his best, he should have way too much for the one-dimensional Varillas.
