Rarely do I bet Davis Cup or go against form, but in this one, I’ll do both. Zhou Yi didn’t start 2024 great, but early in the season, you don’t know whether he was still in offseason mode mid-January. A few weeks can change a lot, especially when it comes to fitness. We also don’t know what form Sebastian Dominko is in. The Slovenian had a nice end of 2023, but didn’t compete so far this year.
Talentwise, I just have Zhou miles ahead of Dominko. The Chinese is a former #3 junior who reached the semifinal at the Australian Open and the quarterfinal stage at the US Open last year, beating Kilian Feldbausch and Rei Sakamoto among others. He also took a set off Cristian Garin at the ATP event in Zhuhai where he received a wild card just as he did in Beijing and Shanghai. The Chinese Tennis Association thinks the world of Zhou and I think he’s ready to show some of that at home in this Davis Cup tie. On quick courts in Guangzhou, his aggressive game should come to fruition as he has powerful groundstrokes and a big serve already. I’m ready to go big on Zhou since I have him closer to a 65% favorite.
