It’s a maiden major quarterfinal for Anna Kalinskaya and a second (consecutive) for Zheng Qinwen. One might have expected Elena Rybakina or Jessica Pegula making it out of this quarter, but Kalinskaya and Zheng are also deserving of making it this far. While it was just a matter of time when the 21-year-old Chinese would go for her first big major run, Kalinskaya has struggled with a lot of injuries in the past.
Zheng is a deserving favorite in this matchup since she simply has the higher upside. That being said, Kalinskaya is arguably in even better form. The Russian only allowed five breaks in 46 service games so far while Zheng lost serve ten times in 45 games. Zheng’s beatdown of Oceane Dodin might also hide the fact that she *just* got over the line against Wang Yafan the match before. Zheng still lacks consistency and with a Grand Slam semifinal on the line, nerves might creep in as well. I can see this match going over in different ways: some solid serving and first-strike tennis, or a topsy-turvy match with so much on the line.
