Not to be disrespectful, but it seems to me that Nicole Melichar-Martinez could be the weak spot in this mixed doubles’ quarterfinal. Jan Zielinski and Kevin Krawietz are both elite doubles players, currently ranked #16 and #17, both with a career-high ranking of #7, while Hsieh Su-wei is one of the all-time greats in doubles competition, having won six majors already.
It’s not the first time Melichar-Martinez and Krawietz are teaming up. Since 2022, they join forces frequently, with scant success. The two were only 1-4 before this Australian Open. Here, the American-German pairing beat Joint/ Sweeny and Samsonova/ Vavassori, both of whom are no world-beaters in doubles. Hsieh/ Zielinski’s wins over Birrell/ Peers and Schuurs/ Nys impressed me some more. The #3 seeds opened 1.67 across all books, which was my fair line as well with the unpredictability that mixed doubles brings along. Therefore, the market move up to 1.83 warrants a play on Hsieh/ Zielinski.
