Olivia Gadecki and Marc Polmans are only playing mixed doubles in Australia (thanks to the wild cards handed to them), and it’s working out quite well for them. The Australian duo is looking to reach back-to-back semifinals after only losing to eventual winners Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos here last year. It would be a third mixed doubles semifinal for Marc Polmans, who already got to the final four in 2021 together with Storm Hunter.
Today’s match against Gabriela Dabrowski and Nathaniel Lammons should be much closer to a 50/50 proposition after my estimations. While Dabrowski and Lammons are arguably the better doubles players, the crowd has propelled Aussie teams to unforeseen heights in years past. Gadecki and Polmans are focusing on their singles careers, however, when playing doubles, they are always competitive. One should also factor in that this will be Dabrowski’s second quarterfinal match of the day as she’ll also bid for a semifinal ticket in women’s doubles. I’m not saying the Canadian isn’t ready to play two matches a day, however, with two semifinals on the line, it will be hard to keep the mental focus at 100% all day. A crowd vehemently cheering for the opponents won’t make things easier for Dabrowski. Again, I have this match at a fair line of 1.85 – 2.15, so there should be enough room to play the Aussies.
