Vinny’s Australian Open Women’s Preview – Boulter vs Yuan

Posted on

In what could be one of the closest matches in round one of the women’s draw, Katie Boulter, world #54, takes on Yuan Yue, currently ranked #61. Both players set up their game around their serve and forehand, playing with controlled aggression. While Boulter is able to generate more power and play on a higher level temporarily, Yuan usually punishes opponents’ bad patches with her consistency.

If this match were to be played indoors, I would agree on Boulter being a 60% favorite. However, it will be the hottest day of week one as we’ll scratch the 30°C mark. A light breeze might impact play as well a little, especially on the outside courts. Boulter and Yuan are set to play on Court 7, right in the heat of the day. So while Boulter does have the bigger weaponry, I think the conditions favor Yuan a little more. Less than 10 points separate these two in the hard-court Elo ratings and I’m expecting this to be a tight encounter.
