ATP Australian Open Qualifying – Huesler vs Mpetshi Perricard

Posted on

There was a verrrrrry long period where Huesler did not come up as value for me. I thought there was a solid stint in the back end of 2022 and early patch of 2023 where Huesler was overperforming, however 2023 didn’t quite pan out for Huesler in the end. Huesler seemed to get things back on track in the indoor Challenger circuit in the back end of the year, with a number of confidence boosting wins. I saw a lot of promise in the level of Huesler in Hong Kong to kick off 2024, with two strong qualifying performances, a win over Sachko in round 1, and pushing Arthur Fils to a 5-7 5-7 result. I think the form around Fils early in the season is going to hold up quite well. I was also impressed with the composure down a set to Misolic, as well as rattling off the last 5 games in a row to win the third set. His outdoor hardcourt form doesn’t set the world on fire, but it is stronger than his opponents today.

Mpetshi Perricard was able to make the quarter finals of Antwerp (lost to Bublik in 3 sets), a shining light in what was a largely disappointing back end to the season. There was a lot of promise in the 2023 season for the 20 year old, and his 26 aces against Barrios Vera in round 1 of qualifying was impressive (as was serving 81% of first serves into play).

Stacking up the form of both players here, I am a little surprised to see the price on Huesler. He has the form and experience edge, and although the windier conditions won’t suit either player this afternoon, I think Huesler should be able to handle them a little better.
