Vinny’s Australian Open Qualifying Women Preview – Eala vs Peterson

Posted on

It’s not a matter of if but a matter of when Alex Eala makes her breakthrough. At 15 years of age, the Filipina has already been ranked #2 in juniors. After winning the US Open girls’ competition in 2022, she’s now testing herself on the pro tour. Last year, Eala finished on a 45-23 win-loss record (37-16 on outdoor hard courts), although mainly playing on the ITF tour. Eala still was able to beat some household names like Jaqueline Cristian, Eva Lys, Arina Rodionova, Elizabeth Mandlik or Anna-Lena Friedsam, winning two titles at ITF W25 level in the process. A slow and steady rise might be even more sustainable than starting off with a bang and inducing a lot of expectations. The talent is there for the lefty who possesses a super solid game with a cracking forehand and who worked on her footwork a lot last year.

Rebecca Peterson might just be the right player for Eala to start her campaign against. The Swede is still the better player on paper, however, I can’t remember when she’s been fully healthy for the last time. I do give Eala a shot even if Peterson was at 100%, but since I highly doubt that to be the case, I’m seeing value on the Filipina not only to keep this close but also to get to the next round.
