Although she did end up defeating Kayla Day in 3 sets in Auckland, I am still not completely sold on the formlines around Yuan coming into this year. I didn’t see enough between the 3 set win over Yuan (having split tiebreaks in the first two sets), and a 2-6 2-6 loss to Martic that has swayed my opinion significantly. The Seoul WTA run to the final late last year was solid, but the quality of tennis in that run from memory was solid without being exceptional.
She gets Shnaider here, who is a player who I think ended up learning some lessons the hard way in 2023. As a young player, that first full season on tour is an absolute grind, and it can be difficult to maintain consistency from week to week. She still did a terrific job of finding her way into the Top 100, and she will be better for the break and the off-season/pre-season. She got dealt a tough hand first up with Andreeva in Brisbane, but this looks a more likely match-up, and I have her odds projected shorter than what is currently available.
