Katie Volynets is in some fine form to start the 2024 season. The 22-year-old American has won all of her three matches so far in straight sets. The scorelines: 6-2 6-0, 6-2 6-2, 6-2 6-3. Two of these wins came against players ranked higher than her next opponent Harriet Dart, namely Elizabeth Mandlik and Anna Bondar. Volynets also didn’t get broken yet as she saved all of the six break points she faced. Talentwise, I have Volynets a tier or two higher than Dart, who already conceded two sets and ten breaks in her wins over Anna-Lena Friedsam, Wang Yafan and Nao Hibino.
I’m going with the early-season form here and trust the talented American to make her first WTA 125k final after being a semifinalist at that level for the fourth time already. Last year, Volynets shockingly defeated Veronika Kudermetova in the second round of the Australian Open and I also think the Aussie conditions suit her better than Dart. I’d play Volynets all the way down to 1.67.
