Sending this one late on Tuesday night, so I won’t keep you forever.
Lukas Klein is fresh off an impressive win over Sebastian Baez, a triumph that added to a sensational back-end of 2023 on the Challenger Circuit, but he faces a different test in Arnaldi this time around.
Matteo Arnaldi played 19 hard court matches on the main draw last season, winning 11 contests over the likes of Popyrin, Struff, Wolf, Fils, Kubler – these aren’t scrubs – and the presumption is Arnaldi’s only going to improve given his ripe age of 22.
He knocked off Fucsovics today in a rain delayed three-setter, and should find things easier against Klein in my opinion.
The Slovakian was able to accrue a Challenger title in the aforementioned run, but given the people he knocked off during this tournaments, it looks like more of a flash-in-the-pan accomplishment rather than something he’ll be doing often.
Arnaldi is someone who should be knocking it around on the main draw for years to come, whereas Klein played just three tour-level contests last year, going 0-3.
These are certainly different form lines, and these matches are always tricky to analyse, but I’m backing the upside Arnaldi has shown versus someone who beat Baez over three sets, someone I’m very low on.
