2023 Australian Open Day 1 Thoughts

Posted on

Another Grand Slam is upon us, and I am ready to go!

It has been a slightly more settled lead in to the tournament this year, which has been fantastic. It shapes to be a warm start to the tournament, with 30+ degrees forecast for both days of the opening round. Day 1 is here so let’s get stuck into the action!

Let’s take a look at the “Should Win” list for Day 1.

Other Thoughts on Matches Today

As can be the case with a massive slate of matches, there were a couple of match-ups in particular that just missed the cut by way of being a suggested bet. I was impressed with the level the Etcheverry last week in Adelaide, even though hardcourts aren’t his favourite surface. The weather conditions here in Melbourne are likely to suit him a little more than Barrere. Etcheverry can find himself prone to lapses at times, however his best level is more than competitive here and likely be able to push this match-up over the games total.

Another player who appeals is Kalinina to win and cover against Vandeweghe. Vandeweghe’s level is not quite what it used to be, and I thought the current game handicap for Kalinina looked to be a touch low in this one.
