Confidence is a funny thing at times in tennis, and we are seeing that in full flight here in Montreal with Amanda Anisimova.
Alex and I were chatting on the Eat Sleep Tennis Show this week that the first round bye can be a bit of a negative for some players looking for time on court, and we discussed Amanda Anisimova as a player who has actually gone the other way this week, needing to qualify for the main draw. It has been tough going for Anisimova both on and off court over the course of the last 18-24 months, and at Wimbledon and San Jose it was almost a little difficult to watch herself in commanding positions, only to lose matches to Linette and Tomljanovic. Fast forward to this week and she is converting leads into wins, winning 8 of nine sets on her way to the third round (and responded to dropping a set with a bagel of her own). The second serve is still lacking a little bit at times, however her overall game, particularly against players who are bigger strikers of the ball. She gets that very opposition today in Karolina Pliskova.
Karolina Pliskova has had a rollercoaster of a 2021, with a Wimbledon finals appearance as the high and drawing close to Jessica Pegula so many times this year as her low. She struggled her way through her first match here, scraping over the line against Donna Vekic in a third set tiebreak. Whilst she was a little more consistent across the Wimbledon fortnight, she hasn’t been able to show that consistency on the hardcourt this year to justify this price in warm conditions. Her double fault rate, combined with the times she is producing them, is another cause for concern, one I haven’t had in recent years.
Just a 2 unit selection as Anisimova herself is only recently turning around a stretch of form hampered by confidence and injury issues, however she presents as value here in my opinion, especially in the relatively warm, humid conditions.
