ATP Great Ocean Road Open Preview: Mager vs Thompson

Posted on

Everything I have seen out of Jordan Thompson seems to be positive, with the Australian coming off a career year and hasn’t had to go through the quarantine period like many over the last fortnight. Now on the verge of the Top 50, Thompson will benefit from the conditions in Melbourne, and looks ready and raring to go based on his recent training with Nick Kyrgios.

I actually prefer the reduced crowds for Thompson, as he is one of the players I have marked in the past as perhaps struggling with significant crowd support and playing at home at the Australian Open specifically. The conditions are made the suit, and I don’t mind Thompson if the wind were to pick up, as is predicted.

I am not sure a lot can be made from Mager’s three matches in Delray Beach, as they came against two Harrisons and Querrey. He can show flashes of brilliance on hardcourt, however there just isn’t enough consistency in his game for me to be able to trust him here, even with a 3.5 game handicap.

I am happy to take the more consistent performer of late, with less recent quarantine restrictions and conditions made to suit him today. I will take Thompson at the game handicap for 2 units.
