ATP Roland Garros Preview: Tsitsipas vs Dimitrov

Tsitsipas vs Dimitrov (Approx 09:30pm AEDT)

With both players coming off opposition retirements in the last round, both these men should be fit and firing to attack what looks to be an exciting fourth round encounter.

The more I have watched Grigor Dimitrov over the last couple of weeks, the more I am warming to his overall form. His win over Jannik Sinner in Rome is starting to stack up on what we are seeing in Paris. He is yet to drop a set, with strong wins over Barrere, Martin and Carballes Baena (ret up 2 sets to 0) to reach the fourth round. It has been discussed multiple times over the course of the last fortnight how beneficial it is to have a capable backhand slice in these conditions, and you could argue Dimitrov’s is one of the best left in the tournament. He looks fitter than we saw in New York (struggling early in his return from his COVID positive test), and more importantly looks to be high on confidence.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has also won eight sets in a row to reach the fourth round, however his effort commenced when 2 sets to 0 down against Jaume Munar in the first round. Much like Dimitrov, it has been smooth sailing through rounds 2 and 3, with Pablo Cuevas and Aljaz Bedene both struggling to match Tsitsipas, with Bedene retiring when trailing due to injury.

I have this match pegged as far closer than the current odds suggest, especially over the best of 5 set format. Against a power player such as Tsitsipas, the backhand slice from Dimitrov will allow him to regain position in-rally, which will go a long way. Dimitrov has the mixture of movement and ability to attack that will pressure Tsitsipas, who has shown over the last month or so that there are still some doubts and question marks over him in tight moments. I still don’t quite trust that he has the patience to be at his absolute best on clay, so that is another part of the appeal in the price of Dimitrov.

Happy to play the Bulgarian to cause an upset here for 2.5 units.

Suggested Bet

2.5 units Dimitrov to defeat Tsitsipas at $3.60 at Topsport
