Monteiro vs Giron (Approx 07:00pm AEST)
I am more than happy to fade the American Marcos Giron, backing up off a long 5-set match in round 1 against a better claycourter in Thiago Monteiro.
The conditions in Paris look to be perfect for the Brazilian, who dominated in his 7-5 6-4 6-2 victory over Nikolaz Basilashvili in round 1 in just over 2 hours. He didn’t drop serve for the match, and won over 70% of points behind his first and second serve for the the match. Coming off a solid week at Challenger level last week in Forli, it was nice to see Monteiro win well first-up in Paris.
Giron did it the hard way in his round 1 win over Quentin Halys, progressing with a 7-5 3-6 6-7 7-5 8-6 victory in 4hrs22mins. It was a slug to the end, with Giron claiming one of the better clay victories of his career. Backing up off this match, I would need to see a steep improvement from the American for him to stick close with Monteiro today. The left handed should be far too consistent on the clay, as he has shown over a decent body of work in recent years. at ATP and Challenger Level.
Clay isn’t a happy hunting ground for Giron, and given his average first serve speed in round 1 was 166km/h, I do feel Monteiro is going to be able to consistently find a way into the Giron service games. I am happy to take Monteiro here at the game handicap for 1.5 units in what should be a solid win for the Brazilian if he can maintain his recent form.
Suggested Bet
1.5 units Monteiro -6.5 games vs Giron at $1.95 at Topsport
