ATP Roland Garros Preview: Wawrinka vs Koepfer

Wawrinka vs Koepfer (Approx 07:00pm AEST)

Dominik Koepfer got the better of me in round 1 by defeating Antoine Hoang in Round 1, however this looks to be a horrible match-up for him in Stan Wawrinka in Round 2.

I stayed away from Wawrinka’s round 1 match with Andy Murray as I wanted to see how well he was moving given his recent injury at Challenger level and then subsequent poor showing in Rome. I saw exactly what I wanted to see from the Swiss in round 1, with a comprehensive victory over Murray 6-1 6-3 6-7 in 97 minutes. 42 winners and 27 unforced errors in what turned out to be a one-sided victory.

Koepfer was a little more passive than I anticipated in round 1, however it paid off for the German. Over half (55/109) of Koepfer’s points won for the match came from Hoang’s unforced errors, something that is highly unlikely to occur today against a seasoned campaigner in Wawrinka, who delivers his best tennis at grand slam level.

I also don’t see a particular serve from Koepfer that is going to work for him as a leftie in this situation. Stan should have no issues on the forehand return, and Koepfer’s serve to the backhand side, notably on the Ad side, will be thoroughly neutralised by the slice return from Wawrinka.

This game handicap sits at 5.5 games, and that is something I am happy to attack here for Stan. He should be far too good today on form, and I am happy to take this for 1.5 units.

Suggested Bet

1.5 units Wawrinka -5.5 games vs Koepfer at $2.00 at Unibet
