ATP Roland Garros Preview: Vukic vs Martinez

Martinez vs Vukic (Approx 07:00pm AEST)

Whilst it was fantastic to see the Australian Aleksandar Vukic qualify for the main draw at Roland Garros, I think the run may come to an emphatic end today at the hands of Pedro Martinez.

On a faster clay surface, you could potentially make a case for Vukic being more competitive in this one. So much of his game revolves around his serve and forehand 1-2 punch, and the heavy conditions against a highly capable claycourter in Martinez in my opinion is a recipe for disaster. I think Martinez has a great chance of being able to neutralize the Australian’s serve fairly consistently on a dead, heavy court, making life incredibly difficult for Vukic.

Whilst some qualifiers have had the edge over their higher ranked opponents in the conditions on day 1, it is worth noting that both these men made their way into the main draw via qualifying. Martinez had quite a tough trio in Masur, Haase and Blanch, however he was able to make his way through for the loss of only one set. His final round win over Blanch was most impressive, not facing a break point for the match and committing only 4 unforced errors across the two sets. When you consider that Vukic has had three tough battles, including saving a match points against Alcaraz in round 1, and saved 14/21 break point chances faced in tough conditions, it isn’t going to get any easier today for the Aussie.

Looking at long term clay form, and the conditions which are likely to heavily favour the Spaniard, I am happy to side with Martinez at the -6. game handicap. He should be too good for too long in this match-up.

Suggested Bet

2 units Martinez -6 games vs Vukic at $1.91 at Topsport
