ATP Roland Garros Preview: Sinner vs Goffin

Sinner vs Goffin (Approx 07:00pm AEST)

I have received a number of questions about this match, with what looks to be an even split of opinions on each side of the fence.

For me, this match is an absolute ‘No Bet’ match for a number of reasons.

This will be the first match where we get to take a look at the Court Philippe-Chatrier in these conditions. Given the forecast currently for Paris, there is also a possibility for this match to be the first one played under the new retractable roof.

If you want to look at the lead-up form of both players, you have you give the edge to Jannik Sinner. The big flashing beacon in his form over the last couple of weeks has been his win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in Rome. Interestingly, Tsitsipas mentioned it was the first time in many years that he was at a tournament without his father, who he referred to as his ‘Co-pilot’ which is mildly alarming and a discussion for another time. He was unable to back that win up though, losing from a set up to Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.

What is going to be absolutely crucial for Sinner? Starting well. Were this a best of 3 set match, I would be more inclined to make a play here on Sinner given the recent form of Goffin. The longer format brings the Belgian back into it, with far more experience at Grand Slam level. Whilst the conditions were entirely different at the US Open, it is worth mentioning that Sinner was 2 sets to 0 up on Karen Khachanov before starting to fade with cramps. He is looking great over the 3 set matches, but this is another level and I need to see more of him in the 5 set arena before I can trust him at such a price against a seasoned campaigner in Goffin.
