ATP Hamburg Preview: Garin vs Nishikori

Garin vs Nishikori (Approx 06:00pm AEST)

Given the nature of Kei Nishikori’s performances on clay over the last couple of this, it feels as though his current performances are a means of slowly building up his time on court so early into his return from injury.

We have seen a gradual progression of Nishikori over his 3 ATP level matches in the last couple of weeks. In his first match against Miomir Kecmanovic, there were patches of quality tennis in the first set, before Nishikori fell away in sets 2 and 3, losing 6-4 4-6 2-6. He backed up last week in Rome, defeating an out-of-form Albert Ramos 6-4 7-6, before falling to Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. He lacked the killer instinct we have seen from Nishikori over the years, and looked to be moreso content with the match regardless of the outcome overall.

Nishikori’s quest for time on court continues here in Hamburg, starting as a favourite against competent claycourter Cristian Garin. Whilst Garin was ultimately disappointing against Borna Coric last week, his double faults in key moments are an area I would expect to be tightened up today from the Chilean. He looked solid overall against Coric in rallying, and after his first match back on the clay last week, we should see a much improved effort from Garin today.

I cannot have Nishikori as a favourite against Garin on clay so soon into his comeback. Happy to take Garin here for 1.5 units at the $1.95+.

Suggested Bet

1.5 units Garin to defeat Nishikori at $1.97 at Topsport
