WTA Cincinnati – Azarenka vs Cornet

Azarenka vs Cornet (Approx 02:30am AEST)

The market has overreacted to wins over Vekic and Garcia, and I am more than happy to side with the underdog in this one.

Alize Cornet has well and truly snuck under the radar this week in her return to the tour. Straight set wins over Caty McNally and Australian Open champ Sofia Kenin is an impressive start to her New York campaign. She is tactically a very smart player, and isn’t as impacted by the fast hardcourt as much as some other players on the tour. In fact, I would argue the faster conditions play in her favour.

It was only a week ago that alarm bells were ringing regarding the performance of Victoria Azarenka in Lexington, when she lost in quick time to Venus Williams in 80 minutes. My question is: how much are we reading into wins over Donna Vekic (with a first serve % of 49%) and Caroline Garcia (also quite out of form, and should have forced a third set in their match)?

I think the past head to head advantage, heavily favouring Azarenka, has also played a role here. It needs to be acknowledged that Azarenka is not the same player we saw in her prime, and Cornet isn’t going to give up anywhere near the number of cheap points Azarenka has received through the first two rounds.

The $2.30 for Cornet to progress looks to be great value in my opinion, and worthy of a 1.5 unit selection.

Suggested Bet

1.5 units Cornet to defeat Azarenka at $2.30 (+130) at Topsport
